Introduction

The Shuna is Werner's best selling high angle paddle. Its mid-sized blades make it a good choice for a wide range of paddlers. The slight dihedral shape keeps the paddle moving through the water smoothly by directing water evenly off both sides of the paddle, reducing both flutter and fatigue, which translates to a more efficient day on the water.

The Shuna is the smaller of Werner's two solid laminate modern style (not "low angle") sea kayak paddle blades. It's a good blade size for most women and small to average sized guys. (For a similar but bigger paddle, see the Werner Corryvreckan paddle). The Shuna paddle is available in a choice of carbon or fiberglass blades, this page is for the fiberglass version.

Description

In general, short, wide blades like the Shuna's are more forgiving (less prone to diving) than long, narrow blades (i.e. as on low angle paddles). This makes paddles like the Shuna easier to use when learning rolling, sculling and other combination strokes such as for leaned turns, and the Shuna paddle is especially popular with advanced paddlers because the rougher the conditions you paddle in, the more you need to use strokes where short wide blades shine. When you are trying to spin your kayak around between wave crests in surf or high winds, you can really feel the difference that a forgiving blade makes. For recreational kayakers, the advantages of short wide blades may not be as noticeable as when rolling etc., but the benefits are still there.

Paddle Shaft Construction

The Shuna is available in carbon or fiberglass laminate. Carbon paddles are lighter which makes them less fatiguing to use. When you look at the numbers for their weights it doesn't seem like a big difference, but when you swing the paddles as if you were using them in a forward stroke, you can feel the difference right away. If buying your first paddle or a spare paddle, the fiberglass Shuna would be a good paddle, but when you really know what paddle you like (the blade size and style, length, etc.), it's worth getting a carbon one.

Neutral Bent Shaft

Werner's neutral bent shaft aligns your wrists in a more ergonomic position to reduce fatigue while grasping the shaft. Proper ergonomic hand, wrist and forearm position alleviates stress and strain and the potential for injury. Also available in the straight shaft.

Paddle Shaft Diameters

The Shuna is available in standard and small shaft diameters. For most people (men and women), even the standard shaft is too small and they do well to build it up with after market grip tape etc., but if you often have trouble finding gloves small enough to fit your hands (XS and smaller glove size) then the small shaft diameter is for you.

Paddle Angle Offset

The Shuna comes standard with Werner's Adjustable Ferule with internal splines that allow you to set it at any feather angle from 0 - 90 degrees left or right in 15 degree increments.
